What Is Disc Pain?

Your spine is made up of bones called vertebrae, and between each pair of vertebrae sits a disc. These discs act as cushions that absorb shock and allow your spine to bend and twist. Each disc has a tough outer layer and a softer gel-like center. When a disc is damaged, the outer layer can crack or weaken, and the inner material can push outward. This is commonly called a herniated disc or a bulging disc.

When a damaged disc presses on a nearby nerve, it causes pain that can range from a dull ache to a sharp, shooting sensation. The pain often travels to other parts of your body depending on which disc is affected. A problem in the lower back can send pain down into your legs, while a disc issue in the neck can cause pain in the arms and shoulders. Disc pain is one of the most common reasons people visit our Saint Paul Chiropractic office.

Types of Disc Problems

Not all disc problems are the same. The type of injury affects what symptoms you feel and how we treat it. The most common disc conditions we see include:

  • Herniated discs, where the soft center pushes through a crack in the outer layer and presses on nearby nerves
  • Bulging discs, where the disc extends past its normal boundary but hasn’t ruptured completely
  • Degenerative disc disease, where the discs lose moisture and height over time, reducing the cushion between vertebrae
  • Disc protrusion, where part of the disc pushes outward and may contact the spinal cord or nerve roots

Each of these conditions can cause significant pain and limit your ability to move, sit, or stand comfortably. The good news is that many disc problems respond well to chiropractic care without the need for surgery or long-term medication.

What Causes Disc Pain?

Disc injuries can happen suddenly or develop over time. Some of the most common causes we see at our St. Paul office include:

  • Heavy lifting with poor form, especially twisting while holding a heavy load
  • Car accidents that compress the spine on impact
  • Years of poor posture that slowly wears down the discs
  • Repetitive bending or twisting motions at work or during sports
  • Age-related wear that causes the discs to dry out and lose flexibility
  • Sudden falls or impacts that put too much force on one area of the spine

Symptoms of disc pain vary depending on the location and severity of the injury. You might feel a sharp pain in your back or neck, numbness or tingling in your arms or legs, weakness in certain muscles, or pain that gets worse when you sit, bend, or cough. Some people also notice that the pain is worse on one side of the body.

How Chiropractic Care Treats Disc Pain

Dr. Bria Spree begins with a detailed exam to find out exactly which disc is causing your pain and how severe the damage is. She’ll check your range of motion, test your reflexes, examine your posture, and take X-rays if needed. This gives us a clear picture of what’s going on so we can create a treatment plan built around your specific condition.

Chiropractic adjustments for disc pain focus on taking pressure off the affected nerve. By restoring proper alignment to the vertebrae above and below the damaged disc, we create more space for the disc to return to its normal position. This reduces the pressure on the nerve, which is what’s causing most of the pain, tingling, and weakness.

Treatment is gentle and controlled. Dr. Spree uses techniques that are safe for disc patients, avoiding high-force movements in the area of injury. Many patients feel relief after just a few visits, and with continued care, the disc can heal and the symptoms can resolve fully. Dr. Spree will also teach you exercises and habits that protect your discs and reduce the risk of future problems.
